Origin of Reiki: Where Does Reiki Come From?

Reiki: What is it?

Originally originating in Japan, Reiki is a centuries-old healing technique to treat physical, mental, and emotional ailments. 'Reiki' refers to the universal life force that heals maladies. The universal life force energy is passed during an attunement process, from Master to student. These attunements allow students to give clients Reiki treatments and carry out healing sessions on their own, both personally and on animals.

Where did reiki come from?

It is believed that Reiki originated in Japan in the 19th century, when Mikao Usui discovered it. However, it is possible that Dr. Usui learned about Reiki by reading a Tibetan text called “The Tantra of the Lightening Flash, which Heals the Body and Illumines the Mind”.

Usui began practicing medicine and teaching Reiki after having a spiritual experience on Mount Kurama. It was on the mountain that he gained an understanding of the power of Reiki and shared the story and healing energy with others. Usui passed away in 1926, leaving behind a legacy of healing that continues to be practiced today.

Reiki Symbols

The practice of Reiki includes three main symbols, which were used by Usui to focus and direct the energy. These symbols are used to help open and align the energy pathways in the body and to promote relaxation and healing. This practice is based on the belief that when energy flow is blocked or unbalanced, the body suffers and a person may experience emotional and physical problems. Through Reiki, these blockages can be released and balance restored.

Reiki Lineage

Dr. Usui disseminated his knowledge and taught Dr. Hayashi who was a naval surgeon. Dr. Hayashi treated his surgery patients in a Reiki clinic he opened in Japan. One of his patients was named Hawayo Takata. Takata was diagnosed with gallstones, asthma, appendicitis, and a tumor. Takata was scheduled for surgery, but her intuition told her to seek out alternative healing methods. Takata asked Dr. Hayashi if there were any other healing methods available and Hayashi pointed her to his Reiki clinic. After four months of Reiki sessions, Takata recovered from all ailments. Takata was so impressed with Reiki that she asked to be trained under Dr. Hiyashi. Takata was attuned in 1938 as a Reiki Master.

Takata brought Reiki back to the United States and is known for starting the tradition in the west. Takata trained a total of 22 Reiki Masters. One of the 22 Reiki Masters was John Harvey Gray. John went on to establish the John Harvey Gray Center for Reiki Healing, LLC to teach Reiki to the world. John taught and his wife, Reiki Master Teacher Lourdes Gray, and Lisa became a Reiki Master after studying for several years under Lourdes.

Different Degrees of Reiki Training

Reiki is divided into different degrees of training. There are the First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, or Reiki Master levels. Depending on the degree it requires various amounts of training. The first few degrees are relatively short and can be completed over a few days. But to become a Reiki Master many organizations require a year or longer of study and practice.

Reiki Healing Treatment Sessions

Receiving a Reiki treatment typically involves lying down on a massage table. The Reiki practitioner lightly places their hands either directly on the body or over the body to direct the Reiki energy. Depending on your individual needs, the session may last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or more.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is beneficial for many issues, including physical pain, stress, emotional healing, spiritual growth, insomnia, and more. It can also be used for those with chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. Many people use Reiki to help with mental health and emotional blockages as well.

Number of Reiki Sessions Needed

The number of Reiki sessions needed can vary depending on the person’s individual needs. Most practitioners recommend at least three sessions before determining if any further sessions are necessary. It is also important to note that regular treatments may be needed for certain conditions to see lasting results.
